Love + Forgiveness Mural

The Bleeding Heart Design (b.h.d) organization is dedicated to rethinking the bond between architects, artists and designers and the people for whom they create. The purpose of the b.h.d movement is to evoke emotions that spark positivity in the lives of people through designed objects and art, demote negative behavior, promote self-evaluation and encourage people to question the positivity level of their role in society.

This year’s Call for Entries main design theme was Love + Forgiveness. Click HERE to see archived information.

The winner of the Bleeding Heart Design 2014 Call for Entries project was Adrienne Pickett! Read her bio and mural description below.

 The winner!

Adrienne Pickett’s love affair with the fine arts began when she was just 3 years old sketching pictures of her mom with Crayola Crayons. She remembers very clearly that the drawings appeared “off” as they had no necks. Over time her sketches, paintings, and drawings as a child began to garnish attention from adults who displayed her works in frame shop windows.

Her parents enrolled her in formal art classes at the age of 8, where she was introduced to other artists who familiarized her with varied painting techniques and helped hone her artistic observation skills. She eventually began volunteering to teach other young children at the same school.

She was awarded a fine art scholarship from the City of Livonia and several Gold Key Scholastic Art Awards, and in 2000 Adrienne entered the University of Michigan School of Art and Design. Under their critical and watchful eye, she earned her BFA in Graphic Design and Illustration with a dual major in ancient history from the school of LSA.

Since graduating from the University of Michigan in 2004, much of Adrienne’s professional focus has been as an art director. She lived in Denver for a number of years before returning to the Detroit area. She has won several awards in graphic design as well as a feature from the Detroit Graphics Exposition.

After the birth of her first child, she decided a return to the fine arts was the best way to be a positive force in the world for her daughter.

Love and Forgiveness.

Since becoming a mother last year, my entire perspective on humanity seems to have shifted. I want to reach out more, givemore, be more than who I am. I grew up in the shadow of the pain and the crumbling infrastructure of Detroit. And I want to be a part of the movement to help heal it.

When my husband sent me this mural competition, I instantly saw it as an opportunity for me to help heal some wounds, to help people fall in love with their neighborhood again. I also saw it as a bridge between worlds and a connectedness of purpose. The vision that came to mind immediately was father and child, intertwined and connected to one another. And growing from them like wings is the heart of the city and the soul of the neighborhood.

Parenthood is a precious gift that gives purpose and meaning. And so much of what troubles people and communities stems from the brokenness of their family. I’d hope that this would give pause to any parent as a reminder of what’s important.
